Birth Control in Our Water: The Unexpected Issue You Need to Know About

When you shower or use the faucet in your house, you expect clean and safe water–something you can trust and use in your daily routine. But in previous blogs, we have shown that not only are there still harmful substances found in your water, but traces of something that we did not expect; birth control. Research suggests that synthetic hormones from contraceptives are making their way into our water supply. But the biggest question is, how is this happening and how will it impact our health?

How is it Ending In Our Water?

When a pill is taken, it doesn't take long for the ingredients to be absorbed and transferred throughout the body. Interestingly, the body will only absorb 10% of the ingredients and the remaining 90% will be excreted. Either through toilets or through sweat which then will be washed down shower drains or washing machines. After being washed away at your home, it will run through the pipes and end up at our water filtration plants. And yes, the plants will filter out most of the contaminants but roughly 1% will stay in our water and be recycled back into our homes.

A study done by the U.S. Geological Survey, tested water across nine states and found 85 man-made chemicals ending up in our tap water, including estrogen from birth control.

Why is This Important?

When it comes to water at your home, you want a sense of safety and security for you and your family. This is very important because exposure to anthropogenic contaminants can impose a risk to your reproductive health. Constant exposure can lead to long-term effects and especially in animals, can lead to less success in breeding and in rare cases, death.

What Can We Do?

Some ways to reduce this are throwing unused pills in the garbage instead of flushing them down the toilet, upgrading filtration plants, or even investing in an at-home or mobile filtration system.

We at Blu Technology, have created many great filtration systems, ranging from single-point systems such as the Solo Mount to three-stage filtration systems such as the Adventure Series AR3 5-Inch,  AR3 XLt 10-Inch, R3, and The TRIO. Investing in one of our systems will help remove these harmful chemicals and ensure the water you and your family are using is safe to drink.
