Staying Safe and Hydrated in Extreme Heat

Summer brings blue skies, long road trips, and time well spent in the great outdoors, but it also brings something much less inviting: extreme heat. Whether you're setting up camp at your favorite RV park or boondocking off-grid in the sun, high temperatures can quickly turn a relaxing getaway into a serious health risk if you're not prepared. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat is one of the leading weather-related causes of death in the U.S. But here is the good news: you do not have to sacrifice comfort or safety to enjoy your summer on the road. With the right tools, good planning, and access to cleaner water, you can stay cool, hydrated, and healthy regardless of the temperature.

Hydration Is Priority #1

  • The body loses more water through sweat in hot weather
  • Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, dizziness, or confusion
  • Rule of thumb: Drink water every 15–20 minutes during heat exposure

Avoid Heat-Related Illness

When the sun is blazing and temperatures climb into the 90s and beyond, your body has to work harder to keep cool. For RVers and campers spending extended time outdoors, this can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, a serious but preventable risk.

Cool Down Your Body Temperature

Keeping your body temperature lower is crucial in avoiding extreme heat and heat-related illnesses, especially when camping with your family.

  • Play Water-Based Games: This will allow the kids to stay cool while enjoying the outdoors.
  • Applying Cold Water: immerse yourself in a cold shower or go for a swim
  • Apply a damp cloth: Applying a wet cloth close to the surface veins (wrists, chest, temple, neck, armpits, and groin) helps pump cooler blood throughout the body.
  • Air Conditioning: Schedule your activities wherever you can find air conditioning during the hottest part of the day
