How To Properly Store Your RV Water Filtration System

RV season is here, which means it’s time to hit the road, enjoy new destinations, and make lasting memories. Whether you're gearing up for your next journey or taking a break between trips, your RV water filtration system deserves proper care. When it’s not in use, storing the system properly can extend its life, preserve filter quality, and ensure safer, cleaner water every time you turn on the tap.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to properly store your RV water filtration system, whether it's for a weekend or the off-season.

Why Proper Storage Matters

Your filtration system is constantly battling sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants. When left with improper care, the wet membrane becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, or algae. Storing your system incorrectly can lead to:

  • Bad smells or tastes in your water
  • Reduced filter efficiency
  • Damage from freezing temperatures
  • Shortened system lifespan

A few simple steps can keep your setup safe and ready to go when you are.

What You Will Need

  • Clean water for flushing
  • Storage/Sealed Container
  • Cloth/Rag
  • Vinegar

Step-by-Step Guide

The guidelines are for Blu Technology products

Water Filters

1. Disassemble

Remove the water filter from its housing system.

2. Flush Away Debris

Rinse the filter components thoroughly with clean water to remove any debris or particles trapped in the filter media.

3. Fully Air Dry

Allow the filter components to air dry completely in a clean and well-ventilated area. Make sure that there is no moisture left, as it can lead to mold or bacterial growth during storage. This drying phase can take around 7 days.

4. Safe Storage

Place the filter in its airtight storage container or bag.

5. Storing Location

Store the filter in a cool, dry, and clean location away from direct sunlight and chemicals. Moisture and heat can damage the filter materials or promote the growth of bacteria. Avoid storing filters in direct sunlight, as UV rays can deteriorate effectiveness. Make sure to protect it from any potential physical damage.

6. Don’t Forget the Expiration Date

Mark your filter's expiration date on your calendar

1. Disassemble for Deep Clean

Remove any detachable parts, such as lids, filters, and attachments, from the stainless steel canisters. This will make it easier to clean each component thoroughly. Soaking is recommended for 12 hours.

2. Rinse With Warm Water

Use warm water to rinse the stainless steel canisters and other removable parts. This will help remove any loose debris or contaminants from the surface.

3. Use Soap, Mild Detergent, or White Vinegar

Apply mild soap or detergent to a sponge or soft cloth. Gently scrub the stainless steel canisters and other parts to remove any dirt, stains, or residue. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals as they can damage the stainless steel finish. Use white vinegar for a more thorough cleaning experience.

4. Pay Attention

If your filtration device has replaceable filters, please use the above-stated recommendations.

5. Rinse Thoroughly

After cleaning, rinse all the components with clean water to remove soap or detergent residues.

6. Allow For Drying

Place the washed stainless steel canisters and parts in a well-ventilated area, ideally in direct sunlight (but not the filters) or in a dry location. Ensure that each component is completely dry before reassembling or storing.

7. Reassemble the Device

Once everything is dry, reassemble the portable water filtration device by securely attaching the canisters, lids, and filters according to the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure all connections are tight and properly sealed.

8. Store in a Clean and Dry Place

Store the portable water filtration device in a clean and dry area away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, or freezing temperatures. This will help maintain its condition and prevent mold or mildew growth.

9. Regular Maintenance

Regularly check the filters and replace them as recommended. Follow any additional maintenance instructions provided to ensure the filtration device continues to function effectively.
