Bottled Water Recall: What You Need to Know
A major bottled water recall has been announced after potential contamination with harmful bacteria. Berkeley Club Beverages, Inc., based in West Virginia, has voluntarily pulled over 150,000 bottles from stores due to the possible presence of coliform bacteria. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has labeled this recall as Class III, meaning that while it's concerning, the risk of serious health issues is low.
Details of the Recall
In total, 151,397 bottles are affected, marked with the codes 090326, 090426, 090526, and 090626. These bottles were sold only in West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia. Coliform bacteria are naturally found in soil, plants, and the waste of warm-blooded animals, including humans. While not all coliforms are harmful, their presence in drinking water can signal the possible existence of dangerous pathogens, like E. coli.
The FDA has not confirmed if E. coli was detected in these recalled bottles. However, the presence of coliforms means water bottlers must conduct more tests. If E. coli is present, it can lead to digestive problems such as diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, fever, and fatigue. These symptoms usually appear three to five days after exposure. While most people recover on their own within a few days, E. coli infections can sometimes affect other areas of the body, like the urinary tract, causing additional pain and discomfort.
Other Recent Water Recalls
This is not the first water recall this year. In March, over 70,000 cases of Fiji Natural Artesian Water were recalled for high levels of manganese. This was also a Class III recall. These incidents highlight the importance of staying informed about the safety of bottled water.
