RV Water Softener Recharge: Everything You Need to Know

There’s nothing like pulling your RV into a campsite, hooking up to a water source, and knowing your setup is dialed in. But if you have ever dealt with hard water, then you know it can make the perfect setup feel subpar. Stiff laundry, chalky dishes, mineral buildup, and dry, itchy skin. That’s where an RV water softener comes in, helping with the calcium buildup by softening the water. A water softener can only do so much before needing to be recharged to continue great and cleaner water flow.

Why Do You Need To Recharge Your Water Softener

RV water softeners use a resin bed to draw in heavy minerals such as calcium and magnesium. This process allows the resin to exchange the heavy minerals with sodium ions, returning the water to a healthy and neutral state. Over time, the resin bed becomes oversaturated and can no longer effectively soften the water. This is why it is important to frequently recharge your softener, as this process flushes out the trapped minerals and restores the resin’s effectiveness.

When Should You Recharge Your Softener

There is no one-size-fits-all schedule for when you should recharge your water softener, but many factors determine when it may be time to begin the recharge process.

  • Gallons of water usage (Blu Technology Capacity is 10,000 Gallons)
  • White Spots over appliances and dishware
  • Lower water pressure
  • Clogged pipes
  • Adventuring in an area with hard water
